For some of us, it might be a little stubby yellow pencil, with toothmarks too many to count. For some – a professional-looking rapidograph. Or perhaps a fancy-shmancy gel pen in the shape of a Statue of Liberty?

We all have a soft spot for this One and Only, the softest/sharpest, shabby/ergonomic, cool/boring WEAPON of MASS DESTRUCTION DISTRACTION DOODLING CHOICE.
If yours happens to bear an image of a little man with enormous head and something sharp sticking up his butt, you’re the “BIC Person”.
In which case you’ll be happy to learn, that there’s more to these pesky little clear-bodied pens than you might think.
Some people make plastic silverware out of them:

Others blow them into contemporary-looking vases:

You can go a few steps further and make table lamps:

And even chandeliers:

Or just stick a candy cap on one of them to satisfy some oral fixation for those of us who were not breastfed enough as infants
:

I’m sure, many of you’ve already seen these amazing photo-realistic masterpieces created entirely with one of (although I suspect it might have taken Juan Francis Cocasas more than one actual pen, considering the physical size of the final artwork) these blue-inked things.

Another “fan favorite”:

gelly roll from Sakura which appropriately lists Doodling as an intended application:
The site has a pretty neat Artist Showcase section for your viewing pleasure. I’m of course, partial to the doodle-affectionados, such as Given Campbell:

My personal darlings are “not-too-sharp, not-too-fat” Pilot pens and I usually have a handful of them on the bottom of my purse, in corners of my drawers, spread out on my kitchen countertops, buried between pillows of my couch, you name it…
What’s your favorite?

I love Pilot pens, too. Currently I’m using this one called the V Razor Point (extra fine), but I’m also a fan of the Precise gel rollers. Black! Always black. For adding color, the Sakuras are fabulous.

Yeees, I have a few of those too. Black
March 3, 2008 @ 2:10 pmAs my daughter would eloquently put it, “we’re practically twins”
Those are really cool applications!
March 6, 2008 @ 9:07 pmI have a lot of Gelly Roll pens and they are really cool for doodling with, as they come a ton of different colors and there are different types like glittery, 3-D, and fluorescent. They are awesome!
March 9, 2008 @ 6:20 pmHi Olivia,
I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve ever tried the 3-D pens, don’t even know what makes the 3D… Fluorescent on black paper is really fun, I’ve tried that :0(
March 11, 2008 @ 12:46 pmI use a Micron 08 pen.
March 25, 2008 @ 8:55 amHi Heather,
I think I’ve used those too, but they were thinner kind and almost scratching the paper
March 25, 2008 @ 12:13 pmYour blog is marvelous! Sakura also makes a “quickie glue pen” and you can use it with embossing powder to emboss your doodles! I’m hooked… :0) Mel
