…Six Questions about Graphic Design.I’m sure you’ve noticed, I never play tags, memes or whatever other silly games bloggers seem to entice each other with (no offense, it’s just not my cup of tea). Honestly… This one I couldn’t pass on because it was fun for me personally to read what others answered and truly, I just like saying out loud “I’m a graphic designer”… Doesn’t it sound way better than “I’m an insurance underwriter” or “I’m a purchasing manager”?
Did I mention it looks good in writing too? So here it goes:
Questions by lovely LaurenMarie aka Creative Curio. Answers by yours truly.
Just for reference, when and how did you get your start in the industry?
I consider myself very lucky. If I wasn’t, who knows what would become of me? I was always kinda “creative”, but never had a strong idea of “who I wanna be when I grow up” (well, astronaut, war hero and next reincarnation of Walt Disney don’t count) I literally stumbled upon (no pun intended) Graphic Design when I was about to finish High School and it quickly became “my thing”. It still is. After college I found a job which I still love dearly. So, it’s been about 10 years “in the industry”, so far so good
How do you define graphic design?
Graphic design is making all things printed (or in some cases - on the web) look good, easy to use/read and attract as much attention as it should. Process is a very fine balancing act, but the results might be quite rewarding.
What was the hardest thing to learn about the industry?
Again, I’m the lucky one. No picky clients, no opinionated managers… But as a designer, you really do have to be a biggest diplomat, for example by letting The Ones Who Make Decisions think they’re the ones who picked the best design, came up with the best idea and made it look so good
What is the best part about your job?
I like the process. I really do. Graphic Design has a ton of “instant gratification” business built right in. You see the results almost right away. And if you like what you see, what you’re doing, it becomes even more fun.
What is the number one thing you would like to tell new designers?
Don’t you ever forget the fun part! Even if you’re designing a stupid, boring office newsletter. It can still be original and interesting looking.
What is something you wish other designers would understand?
I personally hate redoing somebody else’s jobs. We all think different, work different, that’s understandable. But if you leave a lot of junk in your files, it makes it sooooo much harder to deal with, it’s not even funny. Also, style for the sake of style makes me cringe. Some things are just meant to be simple and easy, not overworked.
And to make this whole thing even a little Doodle-related, all of us need to kill some time at work once in a while, here’s BOMOMO:

Neat, contemporary-looking online doodling gadget, tooltips look like a bunch of balls scattering on the surface (following your cursor) and living marks in some sophisticated-algorithm-order. Some a kinda hard to predict, but all are fun to do and results are a pleasure to look at. Enjoy!

So pleased you found my “meme” worthy of your time
I don’t like playing tag games either, except when they offer useful information to readers, which is what I wanted this to be and I’m glad that’s what it is turning into.
Oooh man, I loved what you said about being a diplomat. So true!! Being a graphic designer involves skills I didn’t think I’d need, but are totally necessary. After this, UN treaty negotiations should be a piece of cake

The pleasure is all mine
Seriously, I consider myself very-very lucky not to work in an extremely stressful or competitive environment (I’m not overly ambitious creature overall, can you tell? ;)) But being a Graphic Designer is a really cool thing, and I enjoy it immensely
June 16, 2008 @ 3:38 pmNice find with Bomomo. I couldn’t get away for a while. It’s like Spirograph if anyone remembers those.
