just monkeying around…

Hi there fellow doodlers! This is LaurenMarie from Creative Curio. I’ve been a graphic designer since 2003 and I’ve found that doodling really helps me exercise my creativity muscles.I’ve been a fan of doodlage since about April 2008, when I first discovered it. RaShell has continued to share interesting and inspirational doodles by herself and other talented artists done on and with all sorts of different and sometimes rather exotic materials like buildings, books, CDs, rocks and twigs!

Recently I’ve been trying my hand at doodling and I find it very freeing. Doodling teaches me how to play, have fun and not criticize my drawings and ideas. It’s also a great creative exercise and it even helped me redesign my website.? Finally, doodling helps me learn to just go with the first idea that pops into my head. That idea may not be what I use in the final design, but I certainly explore it fully.

A few weeks ago I rediscovered Illustration Class, one of the websites of Von Glitschka, illustrator extraordinaire. He has a whole section of Creative Exercises that revolve around… you guessed it! Doodling!

Without further ado, my doodles from Doodle Sheet 1!

I noticed that most of my doodles are animals or creatures. Now that I’ve practiced once with this doodle sheet, I challenge myself to come up with doodles that are only people, or only objects, or plants or landscapes. Just because I’ve done an exercise with this sheet before, doesn’t mean I’ve exhausted all possibilities!

If you download Doodle Sheet 1, you’ll find a PDF in there by Von called Why Doodle? He goes over some excellent reasons to doodle, including that doodling improves your drawing skills, helps your abstract thinking ability and, of course, it’s fun!

Why not go grab a doodle sheet or just draw some squiggly lines on your own and share them with us?

Oh that’s a fun doodle font! What’s it called?

Thanks for the chance to guest post on doodlage, RaShell! I’ll put a mention on CC, too.

Have you done these squiggle exercises yet?

    Hi Lauren,

Well, the pleasure is all ours, great to have you here. Fun doodle font is called “Kraboudja” (name makes me think of Krakozhia from the movie Terminal). It came from this great collection: http://www.jankoatwarpspeed.com/post/2008/09/05/10-sketchy-fonts-for-web-designers.aspx
I haven’t done this excersize yet, but I’m planning too. I was actually doing something somewhat similar yesterday. I discovered a whole bucket of rocks I brought over from last vacation, and some of them had vein-like lines on them. So I was following the lines looking for some image to emerge ;) Came up with a lizard and 3 faces. That was fun :)
