… Before we return to our regularly scheduled programming doodles.
I’ve been (a tiny bit obsessively) making these designs for Threadless T-shirt contests… Here’s one I’m particularly proud of (it started, naturally, as a doodle in my sketchbook, and grew into a full-blown color illustration:

If you like it, could you, please-please-please go (click on the pic or here) and vote for it? I know it’s a pain, cause you’d have to register and stuff, but I’m sure you’d do it for me :))
Thnx in advance, and I promise not to bother you with this goofy stuff anymore (you can quote me on that, if I do ;))

I have an appetite for quirky, funny characters holding drinks (of one sort or another), and especially those that make a statement (deliberately or not) about the ridiculousness of humanity, but does so with humor and endearment, not gloomy cynicism. I love this image
I’m curious to know how you apply color. Is it done digitally or is it paint on paper?
September 25, 2008 @ 1:18 pmHi Kurt,
Glad you like it
Btw, check out another one of my drink-holding creatures:

Unfortunately, it’s all digital. I haven’t played with “real stuff” for years… Still fun though. And mistakes are much easier to correct
September 25, 2008 @ 1:31 pmI wouldn’t say there is anything “unfortunate” about digital. It’s just another medium, and yes it does make us mistake-free which is wonderful!
Regarding your frog: drinking a martini and smoking too! You are a doodler of my own ilk

September 25, 2008 @ 1:55 pm@Kurt,
Aaah, that’s funny! I never noticed the martini glass on your u-pic
September 25, 2008 @ 2:07 pmYes, nothing at all wrong with the digital. But real watercolor on real paper has a certain charm that’s easy to imitate but not easy to achieve. Anyhow, they both have their benefits, for sure.
Good luck on your threadless tees! I just started playing around with t-shirts myself, doodle style of course

Wow, good job, Alex. The first one is very well done, although a bit too creepy (Silence of the lamb sequel style ;)), but I would totally wear the second one!!!
Did you enter it somewhere? I’ll vote for it
Unfortunately my design didn’t last more than one day on Threadless (they do that if it doesn’t get enough high scores in the first 24 hours). Oh, well, there’s always a next time
September 26, 2008 @ 8:14 amI didn’t know about the elimination in 24h thing… yep, it is creepy
crazy enough, it’s submitted to threadless…
am i crazy? i’m still waiting for their answer as i just sent it for review.
September 26, 2008 @ 9:01 amYes, yes, there’s such thing, unfortunately. No, you’re not crazy, I think they actually like the crazy-creepy stuff, and yours is very tastefully done. Let me know when it’s up for voting. I think it takes them about a week to put it up, so don’t worry, it’ll get there
September 26, 2008 @ 9:35 amWill do. I sent it a couple of days ago. Fingers crossed!
September 26, 2008 @ 9:58 amIt’s up and running! http://www.threadless.com/submission/180038/Open_Minded
September 26, 2008 @ 1:30 pmAlex, you got my vote
RaShell, sorry yours didn’t last longer, thought it was really cool.
September 26, 2008 @ 2:19 pmThank you
